U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush Statement On The Death Of Sgt. Ivory Phipps
Washington, DC ---- Congressman Rush released the following statement: The Congressional Liaison Office recently notified me of the death of Illinois National Guardman Sgt. Ivory L. Phipps, age 44, who was killed on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 while with his unit at a logistics base in Baghdad when a mortar round hit and struck him with shrapnel. Sgt. Phipps is the 4th casualty from the Illinois National Guard killed in Iraqi Freedom
Sgt. Phipps was not only a soldier, but a father, and son. He planned to marry his fiancee, Ms. LaToya Ragsdale, this December. The couple have a 5-month old son named Elijah Lee Phipps.
According to the Defense Department, Sgt., Phipps first joined the military at 18 yrs. old and was a Desert Storm military veteran. He served in the National Guard for 15 years and re-enlisted in February, 2003 to complete another 5 years and retire after 20 years of military service..
