Statement By U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush On The Passing Of Columnist Vernon Jarrett
Chicago, IL. ---- My heart is heavy learning of the passing of veteran writer, reporter, and columnist Vernon Jarrett. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife Fernetta, his son Thomas, and his three wonderful grandchildren.
Mr. Jarrett had a passion for human rights, justice and equality. He demonstrated this passion through a singular journalistic courage and literary excellence. With his powerful and penetrating commentaries, Vernon Jarrett persuaded, instigated, and urged entire generations to challenge the status quo. Unquestionably, his commitment to black empowerment was unparallel.
After writing for both the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago SunTimes, it is appropriate that Mr. Jarrett would end his career working for the very same newspaper that he started with in Chicago the Chicago Defender. He will forever stand in the Hall of Fame with literary giants such as Ida B.Wells, Lou Palmer, and Robert Sengstack.
Chicago is a better place, and we are a better people because of Vernon Jarretts unwavering efforts to be the peoples reporter.
