Rush Statement on House Vote To Terminate Trump’s Emergency Declaration
WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) released the following statement on the House passage of the Privileged Resolution to terminate President Trump's Unlawful Emergency Declaration:
“Today, I stood with my fellow House Democrats to defend our constitutional system of separation of powers and checks and balances by voting to terminate the emergency declaration through the procedures established by the National Emergencies Act.
“President Trump and his beleaguered and embattled administration have made a mockery of the constitutional process by attempting an end-run around Congress to fund his ineffective and expensive border wall.
“This emergency declaration stunt was nothing more than his most recent attempt at a power grab and the latest desperate act of a failed deal maker. Instead of putting America first, he has put his ego ahead of the interest of the American people and our constitutional system of government.
“President Trump knows that there is no crisis at the border, which is why he orchestrated a fake emergency; all to fulfill a campaign promise. Border crossings are down to one-fifth of what they were in 2000 and apprehensions are at their lowest level in more than four decades. The facts are clear and, once again, the President is simply choosing to ignore them.
“I call on Senate Republicans to honor their oath of office and vote for this resolution because failing to do so will fundamentally damage the separation of powers between the branches of our government and cement their complicity in presidential overreach.”
