Rush Statement on House Passage Of Bipartisan Background Check Bill
WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) released the following statement on the House passage of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019:
“Today, the House of Representatives took a significant bipartisan step toward tackling the gun violence epidemic plaguing our nation that steals the lives of nearly 40,000 people every year. The American people have demanded that Congress act to protect our communities and do everything we can to save lives. House Democrats put a screeching halt to years of Republican inaction and obstruction to pass commonsense legislation, which has been supported by 90 percent of Americans, including more than 90 percent of gun-owning households.
“This legislation makes it illegal for any person who is not a licensed firearm importer, manufacturer, or dealer to transfer a firearm to any other person who is not licensed without a background check. The bill also recognizes the need for exceptions in limited circumstances, such as gifts to family members and transfers for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense.
“I believe that H.R. 8 is a critical bill that will help ensure guns do not get in the hands of those who should not have them. Americans across the country are sick and tired of the constant scenes of people losing their lives to senseless gun violence and are demanding change.
“It is past time for action and commonsense solutions, which is why I am proud to stand with my colleagues in Congress to help save lives by passing universal background checks.”
