WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.), released the following statement on Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson's disastrous plan to increase rent on millions of Americans receiving federal housing assistance:

"The American people are once again confronted with an out of control Trump Administration that has taken every opportunity to undermine working men and women. This proposed and irrational plan will harm millions of the most vulnerable Americans.

"It is incomprehensible that this Administration — which Trump promised would be comprised of ‘the best and the brightest' — could even fathom a plan that would be a direct attack on the poor, seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, and working families.

"In Illinois alone, over 220,000 low-income households use federal rental assistance to rent modest housing at an affordable cost and at least 69 percent have extremely low incomes. These are the individuals that are under direct assault with this disastrous proposal. They are simply trying to keep a roof over their heads and make ends meet but President Trump and Secretary Carson are planning to leave them out in the cold. Frankly, this is disgraceful."
