Rush Applauds CMS Expansion of Access to Home Dialysis

WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) applauded the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for their proposed changes to the Medicare End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System (PPS), which would improve the quality of life for countless beneficiaries by providing more home dialysis treatment through increased access to new, innovative, and user-friendly home dialysis machines.

Earlier this year, Rep. Rush led a bipartisan group of House Members, along with Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.), calling on CMS to fully maximize consumer choice, quality care, and health outcomes of dialysis patients by making necessary adjustments to the Transitional Add-on Payment Adjustment for New and Innovative Equipment and Supplies.  Rep. Rush also urged both CMS and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to look for solutions to safely expedite the option of home dialysis in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am delighted to see that CMS is finally changing its rules to expand access to safe home dialysis options for both new and current dialysis patients following my urging,” said Rep. Rush.  “Access to home dialysis has become even more important amid the coronavirus pandemic, especially because dialysis patients who contract the coronavirus are at higher risk of negative complications due to their underlying medical conditions.

“By incentivizing new and innovative technologies for home dialysis, we are reducing these patients’ risk of infection, particularly for black patients, who are less likely to take advantage of home dialysis options than other racial and ethnic groups and are therefore more likely to require in-person treatments multiple times a week.

“I look forward to continue working with CMS in their efforts to drastically increase dialysis treatment in the home by 2025 and to ensure that all dialysis patients have access to the critical care they need.”
