Congressman Bobby L. Rush has served the people of Illinois’ first district for over two decades, representing the Southside of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. Rush is the second-ranked Democrat on the influential Energy and Commerce Committee and chairs its Subcommittee on Energy. During his time in Congress, Rush has sponsored and supported countless pieces of legislation aimed at uplifting the most vulnerable members of our society.
Prior to being elected to Congress, Rush was heavily involved in community organizing and activism as a founding member of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and later serving on the Chicago City Council from 1983–1993. In addition to his Congressional responsibilities, Rush is the pastor of the Beloved Community Christian Church of God in Christ in Chicago.
Rep. Rush is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army and holds a bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University, as well as a master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a master’s degree in Theology from McCormick Seminary.
