2021Congressional Art Competition

Eachspring, I host the First Congressional District Art Competition for high school students. Sponsored by the Congressional Art Institute, this competition seeks to encourage, engage, and recognize students' artistic talent.Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate.

Submissions must be delivered to my district office (11750 S. Western, Chicago, IL 60643) nolater than June 11, 2021, by 5:00 PM CT.

The top ten pieces will be displayed for a two-week exhibit at the Connect Gallery in Hyde Park. The exhibitionwill kick off with a reception for the artists and their families and an awards ceremony. The first-place winner will have their winning piece of artworkdisplayed for a year in the Cannon House Office Building onCapitol Hill.

Submission Information

Student participants'single entry should be original in concept, design, and execution. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.The artwork you submit does not have to be something created specifically for this competition, any piece done during this school year can be submitted. A student release formmust accompany each entry.

The artwork must be two-dimensional, not weigh more than 15 pounds, and should not exceed 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, including frame. Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:

  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal, (it is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
  • Collages: must be two-dimensional
  • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
  • Computer-generated art
  • Photographs
